RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Vice Minister of Tourism Ni Luh Puspa emphasized that the transformation toward sustainable tourism is no longer merely a global trend, but a strategic necessity to ensure Indonesia remains competitive amid intensifying global destination rivalry. She delivered the statement while opening the STDev Circle Forum themed “Sustainable Tourism Movement and Action” virtually on Wednesday (25/02/2026).

“In this regard, the Ministry of Tourism views sustainable tourism as the main foundation for Indonesia’s future tourism development. This approach aligns with the direction of national development policies as well as global tourism dynamics,” Ni Luh said in her official statement.

According to her, the global travel landscape has changed significantly. Travelers are now increasingly aware of environmental issues, cultural preservation, and socio-economic impacts before choosing their destinations.

To address this shift, the Ministry of Tourism is advancing five flagship programs to strengthen the national ecosystem: Travel Safety Enhancement, Tourism Villages, Quality Tourism, Event by Indonesia, and Tourism 5.0. These initiatives are designed to create a resilient, inclusive ecosystem that adapts to technology and delivers more meaningful travel experiences.

Tourism performance throughout 2025 indicates that policy direction is on the right track. International tourist arrivals reached 15.39 million, growing by 10.80 percent. Meanwhile, domestic tourist trips surpassed 1.20 billion, marking a 17.55 percent increase. This growth reflects rising optimism and market confidence in Indonesia’s transforming tourism sector.

International recognition has further strengthened Indonesia’s position as an increasingly competitive destination. Desa Wisata Pemuteran and Desa Wisata Osing Kemiren received awards from UN Tourism. Additionally, 33 hotels and resorts across Indonesia earned MICHELIN Keys recognition, signaling improvements in service quality and globally competitive hospitality standards.

“In 2026, we are targeting stronger performance focused on quality and competitiveness. International tourist arrivals are projected to reach between 16.0 and 17.6 million,” the Vice Minister stated.

She stressed that such achievements can only be realized through strong collaboration among stakeholders. The STDev Circle Forum is considered strategic as it brings together key supporters of the five flagship programs — policymakers, business actors, academics, communities, and youth.

The forum also discussed strengthening green financing, technological innovation, community movements, and the contribution of higher education institutions in building an integrated sustainable tourism ecosystem. Cross-sector synergy remains essential to ensure tourism growth goes hand in hand with environmental preservation and improved community welfare.
