Indonesian Researchers Develop Smart Footwear to Monitor Gait

RRI.CO.ID, Bandung - Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is developing smart footwear capable of analyzing human gait objectively and measurably. It has the potential to be used in health monitoring and supporting data-driven rehabilitation processes.

The research was presented by a researcher at the BRIN's Intelligent Mechatronics Research Center (PRMC), Bahrudin. He presented this during a visit by Bina Sarana Informatika University (UBSI) to the BRIN's Bandung campus on Monday, 9 February 2026.

Smart footwear is designed with pressure sensors embedded in the soles to detect the pressure distribution on the feet. These sensors detect pressure as the foot strikes the ground and wirelessly transmit the data to a control system, to be processed as gait pattern information.

"Each phase of walking produces different pressure characteristics. From this gait pattern analysis, load imbalances between the right and left legs can be objectively identified," Bahrudin stated, as quoted from BRIN's news release published on Wednesday, 11 February 2026.

According to him, weight imbalance often goes unnoticed because, visually, a person feels like they are walking normally. A data-driven approach allows for more accurate monitoring of this condition than visual observation alone.

Through continuous data recording, walking patterns can be studied and compared over time. This, he said, opens up opportunities for more measurable mobility monitoring.

This technology has also been integrated with communication and cloud systems through an application programming interface (API), allowing measurement data to be systematically displayed, stored, and analyzed. Thus, the data serves not only as momentary information but also as a foundation for the development of future mobility-supporting technologies.

The PRMC has claimed that the development is part of their way to deliver adaptive, applicable intelligent mechatronics technology tailored to real needs. This approach positions technology beyond mere technical devices to data-driven solutions that contribute to improving the quality of human life.

"Through the smart footwear development, BRIN continues to encourage the use of data-based research and intelligent mechatronics technology to support more measurable and sustainable monitoring of human health and mobility," Bahrudin said.

Meanwhile, the Head of the UBSI Information Systems Study Program, Sriyadi, said that the visit to BRIN provided students with firsthand experience in understanding the research process. This could lead to the production of useful technology.

"This activity serves as a learning tool for students to gain a deeper understanding of the research and innovation process and understand how the results can be utilized in everyday life," Sriyadi said.
