RRI.CO.ID, Tangerang Selatan - The Indonesian National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) and South Korea will launch the High Performance Computing (HPC) facility. Head of BRIN Arif Satria explained that the inauguration of advanced computing infrastructure marked a significant step forward for data governance and utilization across Southeast Asia.
The initiative forms part of the Korea–ASEAN Digital Innovation Flagship Project and is supported through the Korea–ASEAN Cooperation Fund with a total investment of USD 10 million over four years from 2024 until 2028.
In a written statement on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, the Head of the National Research and Innovation Agency Arif Satria, stated that the project represents the beginning of a broader ASEAN–Korea collaboration in artificial intelligence and advanced digital technologies. "The HPC is prepared to support a wider use to support collaboration initiative and activity between ASEAN countries," he said.
The ASEAN–Korea HPC infrastructure delivers a theoretical peak computing performance of 4.28 Petaflops and achieved a maximum computing performance of 3.10 Petaflops based on standardized testing. The system has also been submitted as a candidate for inclusion among the world’s top five hundred high performance computing facilities.
To support regional accessibility, the infrastructure provides ten gigabit Ethernet connectivity through the Indonesia Research and Education Network and broader Research and Education Network connections across ASEAN member countries. The hardware system was officially received by the National Research and Innovation Agency at the Soekarno Science and Technology Area in Cibinong on 21 April 2026.
He affirmed that data has become a fundamental resource for advancing research and innovation across multiple sectors and scientific disciplines. According to him, addressing regional challenges including climate modeling, artificial intelligence development, and emerging technologies requires exceptional computational capabilities.
Alongside infrastructure development, the Korea–ASEAN Data and Artificial Intelligence Training Program was introduced to gather participants from ASEAN Member States. The program provides in-depth discussions covering major subjects including artificial intelligence, Quantum Machine Learning, and high performance networking technologies.
Highlighting the broader ambition of the initiative, Arif said, “Our main objective is not merely to host the HPC, and we look forward to its broad utilization to encourage new initiatives and collaborative activities.” He added that the facility will remain open for researchers, scientists, industry actors, policy analysts, and planners throughout the ASEAN region.
