RRI.CO.ID, Mataram – The student exchange program between SMAN 2 Mataram and Christian College Geelong (CCG) Australia highlights the importance of cultural understanding in today’s global era. The initiative provides students with direct experience in interacting across cultures.

Through this program, students are introduced to different traditions, values, and social environments. These experiences help shape global awareness and mutual respect among participants.

As a history educator, Rick Geall shared his perspective on cultural diversity during the visit. He emphasized that learning about local history plays a key role in understanding identity.

“I find it fascinating to learn that Lombok has a long history of indigenous people who have lived here for hundreds, even thousands of years,” said Vice Principal of CCG Australia, Rick Geall, Monday, May 4, 2026.

He noted that understanding cultural roots is essential in building respect between communities. Students are encouraged to appreciate differences rather than see them as barriers.

At the same time, he acknowledged that cultural exchange is a natural outcome of globalization. Increased mobility has made interactions between cultures more frequent.

“I think it is natural for cultures to mix as people move between countries, but it is important to respect traditional customs,” he said.

According to him, maintaining cultural identity requires balance. Communities need to preserve traditions while adapting to global developments.

He also pointed out that Indonesia reflects strong cultural diversity. Various traditions and beliefs coexist across different regions.

“What we need to do is respect each other’s culture while understanding that we live in a large and diverse world,” he explained.

Geall further emphasized that cultural preservation can begin with simple actions. Education plays an important role in passing traditions on to future generations.

Such understanding is essential for building harmony in a multicultural society. It also strengthens relationships between countries.
