Bogor Station: The Busiest Commuter Rail Station in Greater Jakarta

RRI.CO.ID, Bogor – Bogor Station is the main railway station serving Bogor, a city about 60 kilometers south of Jakarta and one of the most important cities in the Greater Jakarta area. It combines a railway heritage, dating back to the Dutch colonial period, with a modern role as a major hub for daily commuters.

The station first opened in 1873, when Bogor was still known by its colonial-era name Buitenzorg, as part of the railway connecting the city with Batavia, Jakarta's old name. The private company Nederlandsch-Indische Spoorweg Maatschappij (NIS) built the station.

In 1881, the state-owned company Staatsspoorwegen (SS) built the second building to complement its railway network to Bandung and cities in Central Java. In 1913, SS acquired the NIS line, and the station evolved into its present state as Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) manages the station.

Today, Bogor Station is primarily served by the KRL Commuter Line, Greater Jakarta's electric commuter railway system operated by KAI's subsidiary KAI Commuter. The station is the southern terminus of the Bogor Line (Red Line), which connects Bogor with Jakarta.

Its operational scale is reflected in passenger numbers: during January–June 2026, Bogor Station recorded 18.45 million passenger movements, making it the system's busiest station. The Bogor Line is the system's busiest line, carrying over 78 million passengers over the same period.

To accommodate this demand, the station underwent a major capacity upgrade in 2026, including the extension of platforms on tracks 6, 7, and 8. These platforms were upgraded to accommodate up to 12-car trains, while new and extended canopies protect passengers from sun and rain.

One distinctive feature of Bogor Station is its relationship with Bogor city square (alun-alun). The eastern entrance provides direct access toward the square, giving passengers an alternative connection to the city center in addition to the station's main access.

Bogor Station is also close to Bogor Paledang Station, which serves the Pangrango local train toward Sukabumi. Plans to improve the connection between the two stations include an escalator to a skybridge, making transfers between the stations easier.

For onward travel, passengers can use various forms of public transportation around the station, including BisKita Trans Pakuan, Bogor's city bus service, as well as shared taxis. The station is therefore more than a place to board a train: it functions as an interchange between the railway and Bogor's wider urban transport network.
