RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Traditional markets in Indonesia--once predicted to vanish under the dominance of supermarkets, modern malls, and online shopping--are now experiencing a remarkable revival.

They have reinvented themselves into vibrant cultural and creative spaces where the aroma of traditional spices blends with the aesthetics of artisanal coffee, and where Gen Z and Millennials increasingly seek unique experiences that malls cannot offer.

Far from being damp and chaotic, these markets have become inclusive public spaces that combine nostalgia with contemporary lifestyles, proving that with innovation, local heritage can remain relevant for the future.

In South Jakarta, Pasar Santa or Santa Modern Market has become a symbol of this transformation. Its basement continues to function as a traditional wet market selling vegetables, meat, and fish, while the ground floor offers household goods, clothing, gold shops, stationery, and mobile phone kiosks.

The upper floor has evolved into a creative lifestyle hub, featuring thrift shops, vinyl record stores, antique galleries, coffee stalls, and trendy food courts. It also provides community spaces for workshops, exhibitions, and youth events, making it a magnet for urban creatives.

In Salatiga, also Central Java, Pasar Raya I has become a favorite breakfast spot, reflecting the city’s slow‑living rhythm.

Among the younger generation, traditional markets are increasingly seen as more than just places to shop. For Naura from Demak, Central Java, who has been living in a boarding house in Yogyakarta for the last few years, traditional markets are essential part of her daily rhythm.

“I usually go to a traditional market on holidays with friends because we love cooking. Shopping at traditional markets is not only cheaper but also fun; you can find unique items and spend time together,” she said, recently.

Her enthusiasm reflects a broader trend where markets are not only about affordability but also about atmosphere and experience. “I often shop at Pasar Kranggan, but for culinary experiences or just hanging out, Pasar Gede Solo is my favorite. The atmosphere is exciting and refreshing, with affordable groceries and delicious traditional food in a lively setting,” she added.
