RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Jakarta’s anniversary is commemorated annually on June 22, marking the city’s founding in 1527 when Prince Fatahillah seized Sunda Kelapa from the Portuguese. In 2026, Jakarta celebrates its 499th anniversary on June 22.
To commemorate this milestone, the South Jakarta Administrative Culture Agency has launched a decentralized cultural campaign to revitalize grassroots Betawi heritage.
Rather than confining celebrations to government venues, municipal authorities are channeling cultural infrastructure directly into neighborhoods. The initiative seeks to empower independent art studios (sanggar) and boost civic participation across South Jakarta during a critical transitional period for the former capital.
South Jakarta Culture Agency Head Encu Suhani confirmed that the agency is supporting a diverse portfolio of public performances, tailored to the socio‑demographic needs and distinct characteristics of each sub‑district.
“The South Jakarta City Administration’s Cultural Agency is providing support for various arts and cultural performances, such as traditional dances, lenong, palang pintu, and other cultural showcases,” Encu said in Jakarta on Monday, June 22, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
The anniversary program emphasizes grassroots economic and artistic sustainability. By integrating traditional performing arts -- from comedic lenong folk theater to palang pintu marital rituals-- into local schedules, the agency is injecting fresh funding and visibility into neighborhood artistic networks.
This model turns cultural preservation into an economic driver, helping traditional art forms endure within a rapidly modernizing metropolis.
“Through this activity, we hope Betawi and archipelagic cultural values will continue to be preserved, while increasing public participation in commemorating Jakarta’s anniversary and Indonesia’s Independence Day,” Encu added.
The cultural calendar opened on June 20 with the 5th Petukangan Cultural Village Festival, followed by the Kebon Baru Festival on June 21.
Momentum will build over the coming weekend with the Jatayu Festival Vol. 2 Creative Stage in South Kebayoran Lama, alongside the Jagakarsa Gambang Kromong Festival on June 27–28.
The highlight is the 2nd Fruit Carrying Festival (Festival Mikul Buah), which aims to set a national record with the Original Record Indonesia (ORI) parade, featuring 500 participants simultaneously carrying fruit baskets with traditional wooden shoulder poles.
Through this integration of folk theater, traditional sports, and historic pageantry, planners hope to strengthen social cohesion and foster civic pride as Jakarta enters its 499th year.
“The public is expected to attend and participate in this series of festivals to celebrate Jakarta’s long journey toward its fifth century,” Encu said. ***
