RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s growing appeal as a destination for authentic luxury tourism is drawing attention from global hospitality leaders.

Deputy Director of Regional Operations Asia at Langham Hospitality Group, Sherona Shng, highlighted the country’s potential to develop immersive, high-end travel experiences that go beyond traditional hotel offerings.

“In the past, travelers focused on hotel size and appearance. Today, they seek something more immersive, real experiences,” Shng said during a media briefing in Jakarta on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

She noted that urban encounters infused with local culture are increasingly valued by international visitors. In Jakarta, for instance, business travelers often extend their stay to explore culinary traditions, shop for souvenirs with cultural meaning, or learn about the artistry behind batik motifs.

According to Shng, this desire for city exploration -- walking through streets, blending history with modern attractions, and enjoying cafés, bars, or Michelin-starred restaurants -- represents a major opportunity for Indonesia.

Well-managed hotel restaurants, she added, can significantly boost occupancy rates, given Jakarta’s role as a hub where most visitors spend time.

Deputy Director for Asia Pacific at Smith Travel Research (STR), Jesper Palmqvist, echoed the sentiment, emphasizing that Indonesia remains a comfortable destination for luxury travelers. Despite global uncertainties, he said, the country’s luxury tourism segment has proven resilient.
