RRI.CO.ID, Batam – The Batam City Administration in Riau Islands Province is accelerating its collaboration with the National Innovation and Research Agency (BRIN) to reposition the Batam Botanical Garden as a world-class center for conservation and tourism.

This drive was solidified during an audience between Batam Mayor Amsakar Achmad and BRIN's Deputy for Research and Innovation Utilization, R. Hendrian, at the Mayor’s Office on Wednesday, April 29, 2026.

The meeting serves as a follow-up to a previously established cooperation agreement, stemming from a broader Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two institutions.

Mayor Amsakar emphasized that securing land status and implementing integrated management are vital steps to unlocking the garden's full potential. He noted that the facility's role extends far beyond plant preservation, acting as a potential catalyst for the region's tourism industry.

“The existence of the Batam Botanical Garden is highly strategic. Aside from being a center for conservation and plant enrichment, it also has the potential to become a lever for the tourism sector,” conveyed Mayor Amsakar, as quoted by infopublik.id.

He further stressed that BRIN’s technical support is essential in accelerating research strengthening and the diversification of the garden’s botanical collections.

BRIN officials responded positively to the city's commitment, highlighting the garden's advantageous location in Nongsa, an area already established as a primary tourist destination in Batam.

By integrating the botanical garden into Batam’s existing tourism ecosystem, the agency believes the area can offer a unique ecological experience to international and domestic visitors alike.

Mayor Amsakar added that high-impact publication and promotion will be key to the project’s success. “If we can push the Batam Botanical Garden to become a leading destination and publicize it extensively, it will certainly have a direct impact on increasing tourist arrivals,” he added.

Through this synergy, the garden is envisioned to transcend its role as a research site, evolving into a new landmark for eco-based tourism in the Riau Islands. ***
