RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - State-owned defense company PT Len Industri is strengthening Indonesia’s air defense capabilities by installing the latest-generation radar in Banjarbaru, South Kalimantan. The technology marks the country’s first implementation of Ground Control Interception (GCI) radar, with a detection range of up to 515 kilometers.

The radar was deployed to enhance surveillance of strategic airspace and support real-time defense operations. The system is housed in a 20-foot ISO container, enabling mobility and rapid deployment.

“The advantages of this state-of-the-art air defense radar were directly demonstrated by PT Len Industri’s Board of Directors during a working visit by PT Pemeringkat Efek Indonesia (Pefindo) at the Banjarbaru site,” the company said in an official statement quoted by Antara on Friday, July 18, 2026.

The GCI radar employs stacked-beam technology to improve tracking of aerial objects, even in extreme weather conditions. It updates data every six seconds and features a fast time-to-target to support accurate military decision-making.

The development and implementation involved dozens of PT Len Industri technicians from diverse fields, including civil and electrical engineering, radio frequency (RF), networking, software, and mechanical engineering, covering all stages from installation to final testing.

During operations, all data collected by the GCI radar is directly linked to the Indonesian Air Force’s (TNI AU) defense command system. This integration enables rapid transmission of information on potential threats in Indonesian airspace to support the national defense response. ***
