RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Indonesia's Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs, Meutya Hafid, reported positive developments regarding the Wikimedia Foundation’s commitment to complying with legal regulations for electronic system operators (PSE) in Indonesia. This step is the result of a series of constructive meetings between the government and Wikimedia representatives.
At a press conference at her office in Jakarta on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, Meutya stated that the process has now entered a new phase. Wikimedia finally enters the PSE registration process.
“As of today, the Wikimedia Foundation, together with a team from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, has completed the first stage of registration, which involves submitting the required documents to the Ministry. This will be finalized shortly,” she said.
She hopes that the entire PSE registration process by the Wikimedia Foundation can be completed soon. Meutya affirmed that this registration process is an obligation for all PSEs, both locally and internationally, in order to uphold the principle of fairness and protect consumers in Indonesia.
Previously, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs had restricted the subdomain auth.wikimedia.org, as cited in the ministry’s press release on February 27, 2026. The Wikimedia Foundation has not yet registered as a Private-Sector Electronic System Operator, as required in Indonesia.
This restriction prevents users from logging in or creating new accounts, and activities requiring a user account, such as editing or creating new articles, are temporarily unavailable. Nevertheless, the public can still freely read all information and articles on the Wikimedia main page.
The government has issued official warnings to Wikimedia since November 2025. On April 15, 2026, the ministry issued a final ultimatum for Wikimedia to immediately complete the registration process.
