RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Jakarta is looking to Shenzhen’s success in mass transit as a benchmark for advancing modern, sustainable transit-oriented development (TOD). Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo has met with Shenzhen Metro Group in Guangdong, China, to explore strategies that could strengthen Jakarta’s urban transport system.

“We want to compare the effectiveness of MRT systems in different global cities. Shenzhen is a reference point because of its efficiency in service and operations,” Pramono said in his official statement on Friday, April 24, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

During the meeting, Pramono -- widely known as Pram -- highlighted the stark contrast between the two cities. Shenzhen Metro carries up to 13 million passengers daily across a network of about 635 kilometers, while Jakarta’s MRT currently serves around 128,000 passengers per day.

He stressed that this gap offers valuable lessons for Jakarta to accelerate MRT expansion and TOD development.

“This is urgent, as daily mobility in and out of Jakarta reaches about 4 million people. MRT must be developed as a long-term solution to ease congestion and support integration across the metropolitan region,” Pramono noted.

The visit also marked the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between MRT Jakarta and Shenzhen Metro Group to collaborate on TOD projects and integrated urban transport systems.

President Director of PT MRT Jakarta (Perseroda), Tuhiyat, said the partnership holds strategic value for Jakarta’s future.

“Shenzhen’s experience can serve as a reference for building an integrated railway operation system. This MoU is a step toward solving challenges of modern cities while securing future economic growth,” he explained. ***
