RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - A team of young innovators from University of Indonesia (UI) has drawn international attention with a breakthrough project designed to empower visually impaired runners. Their invention, RunSight—AI-powered smart glasses—has secured them a place among the ten Global Ambassadors in the prestigious Samsung Solve for Tomorrow (SFT) program.
RunSight uses sensors and real-time AI processing to map the environment, guide users along safe routes, and alert them to obstacles. Beyond functionality, the design emphasizes comfort and energy efficiency, making it practical for everyday use.
According to Samsung’s official announcement, Team Labmino is the first Indonesian delegation to reach the Global Ambassador stage of SFT, marking a milestone for the country. Indonesia now stands as one of only two nations in Southeast Asia and Oceania to achieve this recognition in the 2025/2026 cycle.
The Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) welcomed the achievement, framing it as part of its mission to strengthen impactful higher education. “We are proud that Indonesian youth innovation can compete globally. Team Labmino’s success shows how campus support for experimentation and cross-disciplinary collaboration can deliver real benefits to society,” said Director General of Higher Education Khairul Munadi in Jakarta on Saturday, March 14, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Munadi explained that the team’s journey began with the national SFT selection in 2025, followed by semifinal and final rounds, before advancing to the Southeast Asia and Oceania regional stage and ultimately the global selection. The final event, held in Milan in February 2026, featured ambassador appointments, exhibitions of innovative solutions, and networking sessions with investors and partners.
“The government will continue to encourage campus–industry partnerships and the downstreaming of innovation so that solutions like RunSight can be widely applied,” Munadi added.
Director of Learning and Student Affairs at Kemdiktisaintek, Benny Bandanadjadja highlighted that the team’s participation opens doors to research collaborations, pilot projects, and broader industry networks. He noted that RunSight exemplifies how technical expertise in AI, hardware, and IoT can be integrated with user-centered design to address real-world challenges.
Kemdiktisaintek expressed its hope that this achievement will inspire more universities to pursue innovation not merely for awards, but to deliver accessible, replicable solutions that improve community welfare.
“RunSight demonstrates not only technical skill but also a commitment to inclusivity and accessibility. We hope this inspires more students across campuses to innovate with social impact in mind,” Benny said. ***
