RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Ministry of Communication and Digital is preparing to accelerate the national Digital Transformation program in 2026. One of the steps being taken is the acceleration of readiness for adequate computing infrastructure to support the development of resilient artificial intelligence.
Through a press release issued on Thursday, 29 January 2026, Vice Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, revealed that computing infrastructure is a crucial asset for Indonesia to enter the global AI infrastructure supply chain. According to him, there are at least three key factors to achieve this.
Nezar underscored that Indonesia needs to make direct investments domestically, particularly in computing infrastructure, including edge computing and cloud computing. This step is considered essential to strengthen national digital sovereignty while ensuring that technology utilization is optimized in line with local needs.
“The first is about how we carry out localizing. Localizing means we must make investments in Indonesia for computing infrastructure, including edge computing and also cloud. This is very important,” Nezar said.
He continued that beyond infrastructure, an innovation ecosystem that encourages domestic research and development (R&D) must also be built to produce AI models that can serve as solutions to national challenges. In addition, long-term investment is needed so that Indonesia can develop an end-to-end AI ecosystem and compete globally.
“Then the second is innovating. We must be able to shift our R&D to build a strong artificial intelligence capability. And then there is investing. Investing is very important, I think, because it is not only about building infrastructure and cloud computing, but also about securing long-term investment that can enter more strategically into the end-to-end AI ecosystem globally,” he conveyed.
The Vice Minister affirmed that these three aspects are crucial to realizing a digital transformation with real impact, considering that Indonesia is a country with very active technology use and rich mineral natural resources for semiconductor materials. He also affirmed the ministry’s commitment to continuing driving digital transformation by acting as an accelerator and orchestrator, including through the formulation of regulations such as the National AI Roadmap and AI Ethics.
