New Hybrid Pitcher Plant Found in West Kalimantan

RRI.CO.ID, Jatinangor -  Indonesia’s floral biodiversity expanded through a cross-institutional collaboration discovering a new natural hybrid pitcher plant. Young researchers from Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), and IPB University  jointly described the species from West Kalimantan.

As quoted by ITB's official website, the hybrid species was named Nepenthes ×taringkecil and officially published in Phytotaxa January 2026. It represents a natural hybrid between Nepenthes bicalcarata and Nepenthes mirabilis species.

The name taringkecil refers to unique peristome morphology inherited from its parent species.  “We named ×taringkecil because its peristome has paired small teeth measuring about 0.5–0.8 millimeters,” Arifin Surya Dwipa Irsyam, a curator of Bandungense Herbarium of Science and Environment School (SITH) of (ITB) in a release on Saturday, 24 January 2026.

The hybrid combines cylindrical upper pitchers resembling Nepenthes mirabilis with reduced fangs. Visually, it lacks tendril cavities commonly present in Nepenthes bicalcarata species parent.

Researchers did not conduct direct field collection due to limited time constraints. Instead, initial specimens were obtained through collaboration with pitcher plant hobbyists’ community.

Local information indicated both parent species grow together in kerangas forests and peat swamps. These habitat conditions supported the likelihood of natural hybridization in Mempawah Regency.

Scientific validation was conducted in Bogor through complementary roles among the three researchers. Molecular, cultivation, illustration, and morphological analyses collectively confirmed the hybrid’s taxonomic status.

DNA analysis using internal transcribed spacer markers verified genetic proximity to Nepenthes mirabilis. The discovery demonstrates effective synergy between institutional researchers and hobbyist communities documenting biodiversity.
