KBRN, Jakarta: The vast potential of Indonesia’s ornamental plant industry has prompted the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) to intensify sustainable research through innovative horticulture programs.
Breeding and adaptive cultivation strategies are the main focus to meet growing global market demand.
During the HortiActive #23 Webinar on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, BRIN highlighted the theme “Innovation and Development of Ornamental Plants: From Breeding to Cultivation.” The agenda underscored economic opportunities and the importance of applied research with direct impact.
Puji Lestari, Head of BRIN’s Agricultural and Food Research Organization (ORPP), said Indonesia has a competitive advantage thanks to its biodiversity and tropical climate.
“The development of ornamental plants has a strategic position in modern and sustainable agriculture,” Puji said in Jakarta on Saturday, December 20, as quoted by BRIN.
She emphasized that the sector contributes significantly to the national economy, tourism, and environmental preservation, and urged synergy among BRIN, academics, local administrations, and business actors to ensure the widespread application of research results.
Dwinita Wikan Utami, Head of BRIN’s Horticulture Research Center, stressed that technological innovation is key to meeting market demand for diversity in color, shape, and plant resistance.
She noted that research must also reduce dependence on imported varieties. “A comprehensive approach from variety breeding to analysis of development potential must be carried out,” she said, adding that such efforts will strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesia’s horticulture industry.
BRIN Senior Researcher Liaw Lia Sanjaya presented chrysanthemum breeding research using gamma-ray-induced mutation, a method considered effective for increasing disease resistance without reducing market value.
He explained that this approach expands genetic diversity, improves adaptation in lowland areas, reduces reliance on pesticides, and strengthens national seed capacity.
Junior Expert Researcher Herni Shintiavira discussed cultivation techniques for Impatiens (water pansies), which have high economic value. “Optimizing cultivation in each phase determines the quality of the next plant,” she said.
From an academic perspective, Prof. Eddy Tri Haryanto of Sebelas Maret University emphasized the cultural and ecological importance of ornamental plants. He said that research and innovation support can help realize a sustainable green economy. ***
