RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Bali Declaration, born out of the Southeast Asia Ministerial Meeting on Youth and Sports (SEAMMYS) 2026, has ignited a bold vision: hosting the Olympic Games as a united Southeast Asian region, one day.
The Philippines Sports Minister Patrick Gregorio described the declaration as the beginning of a collective dream.
“When the time comes for Southeast Asia to welcome the Olympics as one nation, it will be one of the greatest stories ever told,” he said in a statement released by the Indonesian Ministry of Youth and Sports on Thursday, May 7, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Minister Gregorio emphasized that Southeast Asian countries are now moving toward building shared strength through sports collaboration, youth development, and the growth of the regional sports economy.
He noted that transformation could begin with raising the quality of the SEA Games, ensuring they meet international standards. “Regional sports events should not only be biennial competitions, but engines of economic growth through investment, sponsorship, job creation, and sport tourism,” he explained.
He further stressed that a stronger SEA Games could attract greater investment, generate sponsorship value, create employment opportunities, and bolster sports tourism across the region.
Minister Gregorio also echoed Indonesian Youth and Sports Minister Erick Thohir’s view that sports must be seen as a long-term investment in nation-building and youth empowerment.
“Sports play a vital role in shaping discipline, creativity, and independence among Southeast Asia’s youth, preparing them to compete on the global stage,” Minister Gregorio added.
The SEAMMYS 2026 forum in Bali, attended by delegations from 11 Southeast Asian nations, marked the first ministerial-level meeting dedicated to youth and sports collaboration.
The Bali Declaration outlined six shared commitments, including strengthening high-performance sports systems, empowering youth, and promoting sports as a driver of peace, unity, and sustainable development.
The Bali Declaration is more than a policy document, it is a statement of ambition. By envisioning Southeast Asia as a future Olympic host, regional leaders are signaling a desire to elevate sports beyond competition, turning it into a force for economic growth, cultural diplomacy, and youth empowerment.
SEAMMYS 2026 may well be remembered as the moment Southeast Asia began charting its path toward global sporting prominence. ***
