RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s national team is embracing tough challenges at the upcoming ASEAN Championship Hyundai Cup (AFF Cup 2026), with head coach John Herdman insisting his squad is undaunted by the prospect of facing regional powerhouse Vietnam.
“We’re excited; Vietnam will be a great opponent to test our abilities,” Herdman said at the Bali United Training Center in Gianyar, on Friday, July 10, as quoted by Antara.
He noted Vietnam could be the most difficult rival, having started preparations as early as June 22 under a long-serving coach. “They’ve been together for a while, they know how to win,” added the 50‑year‑old coach.
Herdman also highlighted Indonesia’s eagerness to face Malaysia, another traditional rival in Southeast Asia. “We want to challenge Malaysia whenever the opportunity arises,” he said.
Defender Rizky Ridho echoed his coach’s confidence, explaining that after nearly a week of training in Bali, the squad has begun to absorb Herdman’s instructions.
While acknowledging Vietnam’s strength, Rizky Ridho expressed optimism. “Group A won’t be easy, but we’ll give our best by following the coach’s guidance," he said.
Rizky said the team has focused on physical conditioning and ball control during camp, adding that he feels comfortable training in Bali thanks to previous experience there. “I’m happy with the camp in Bali; it doesn’t require much adaptation,” he noted.
The ASEAN Championship Hyundai Cup runs from July 24 to August 26 in a home‑and‑away format. Indonesia is drawn in Group A alongside Vietnam, Singapore, Cambodia, and Timor Leste. The Garuda squad will host Cambodia on July 27 before meeting Vietnam on August 3. ***
