RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian wushu program has once again proven its staying power on the world stage, securing a top three finish at the 10th Junior World Wushu Championships 2026 in Tianjin, China.
The achievement continues a remarkable streak of podium finishes for the national team, underscoring the sport’s steady development in Indonesia.
“This is something we are truly grateful for, because wushu has managed to maintain its achievements over time,” said Gunawan Tjokro, Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Wushu Federation (WI), in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
He emphasized that consistent results reflect the strength of Indonesia’s athlete development system, which continues to produce talent capable of shining internationally.
Indonesia collected 9 gold, 11 silver, and 7 bronze medals in Tianjin, securing third place overall. This follows a second-place finish at the 2024 Junior World Championships in Brunei (10 gold, 10 silver, 9 bronze) and another third-place finish at the 2022 edition in Tangerang, Indonesia (10 gold, 2 silver, 5 bronze).
Gunawan noted that sustained success is crucial as Indonesia prepares for the 2026 Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, Senegal, where wushu will be contested. He described the current achievements as an important foundation for facing global competition later this year.
Beyond immediate goals, WI is also working with international federations to push for wushu’s inclusion in the Olympic Games. “Hopefully by 2032, wushu will already be part of the Olympics,” Gunawan said.
For Indonesia, the junior team’s consistent podium finishes not only highlight the nation’s growing strength in wushu but also reinforce its ambition to elevate the sport to the highest level of global competition. ***
