RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian men’s doubles hopes took a hit at the All England Open 2026, as Muhammad Rian Ardianto and Rahmat Hidayat bowed out in the quarterfinals after struggling to find composure against China’s Chen Bo Yang and Liu Yu.
Competing at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham, United Kingdom, on Friday, March 6, the Indonesian pair lost in straight games, 16–21, 10–21. Both players admitted their performance lacked patience and control against opponents who refused to make easy errors.
“We played without patience and lost control because they rarely made mistakes. Several shots could have been taken but slipped past me, which affected my confidence at the net," Rahmat said, as quoted on PBSI official website.
Rian echoed the sentiment, noting that Chen and Liu’s defensive structure proved difficult to break. “Their defense was very tight and hard to penetrate. We lost opportunities to finish rallies, and when we failed to capitalize on loose balls, they grew more confident,” he explained.
With Rian and Rahmat’s exit, Indonesia now has only one remaining representative in the men’s doubles draw: Raymond Indra and Nikolaus Joaquin. The young pair is scheduled to face China’s Liang Wei Keng and Wang Chang in their quarterfinal clash.
The defeat underscores the challenges Indonesia faces in maintaining its traditional strength in men’s doubles, while also highlighting the resilience of emerging Chinese pairs who continue to raise the bar in world badminton. ***
