RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian men’s doubles pair Fajar Alfian/Muhammad Shohibul Fikri advanced to the quarterfinals of the Singapore Open 2026 after defeating Denmark’s Daniel Lundgaard and Mads Vestergaard in straight sets at the Singapore Indoor Stadium on Thursday, May 28.
According to BWF records, Fajar/Fikri sealed the victory 21–13, 21–12 in just 40 minutes, showcasing consistent dominance throughout the match.
The Indonesians raced ahead from the start, stealing the first-game interval and building a five-point cushion. Their sharp performance continued as they strung together five consecutive points to clinch the opener.
The second game unfolded in similar fashion, with Fajar/Fikri steadily piling on points before closing out the match with a comfortable margin. Afterward, Fajar expressed gratitude for the win and satisfaction at executing their game plan.
“Alhamdulillah (All praises to Allah), I’m grateful for the smooth performance and the victory. Today we stuck to our initial strategy and managed to apply the right patterns against the Danish pair,” the Thomas Cup captain said.
He noted that Lundgaard/Vestergaard had just won the men’s doubles title at the Malaysia Masters 2026, which made composure crucial.
“They’re an excellent pair, fresh off a championship last week. We tried to stay calm and avoid rushing. Learning from yesterday’s match, today we were more relaxed and enjoyed the game,” Fajar explained.
Muhammad Shohibul Fikri added that the Danish duo’s strength lies in their serve and return variations. “From their previous match videos, it was clear their service game is very strong with lots of variety," Fikri said.
"But today we anticipated it well and managed to counter. The pressure is always there, but we turned it into motivation. Tomorrow we must be even more prepared, whoever the opponent is,” he added.
Next, Fajar/Fikri will face Malaysia’s Goh Sze Fei and Nur Izzuddin in the quarterfinals. Fajar acknowledged their experience and consistency. “I’ve played them often, whether with Rian or with Fikri. They’re experienced players who rarely make unforced errors. Together with our coach and video analyst, we’ll study their game again,” he stated. (Diva Rifdah)
