RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian men’s singles shuttler Anthony Sinisuka Ginting has withdrawn from the Indonesia Masters 2026 due to a lower back injury, his coach said on Thursday, January 22, 2026.

Ginting, a two-time Indonesia Masters champion, was scheduled to face Singapore’s Jason Teh in the second round at the Istora Gelora Bung Karno in Jakarta on Thursday. However, he decided to pull out after experiencing discomfort in his lower back following his first-round match on Wednesday night.

Indonesian men’s singles coach Indra Wijaya said Ginting had attempted to recover with the support of the national team’s physiotherapists, but his condition did not improve sufficiently.

“We tried everything with the Indonesian Badminton Association (PBSI) physiotherapy team to help his recovery, including treatment earlier today. Even after warm-up, it felt impossible for him to play, so I decided to withdraw Ginting from the second round,” Indra said, Thursday, as quoted by Antara.

According to Indra, Ginting felt increasing discomfort during warm-up and concluded that he could not safely continue the match. The withdrawal adds to Ginting’s injury history, although Indra stressed that the current back issue is not a recurrence of a previous injury.

Ginting had returned to competition recently after a prolonged absence due to a shoulder injury sustained at the French Open 2025 in October.

“This is a different injury. His shoulder has fully recovered and hasn’t caused any problems. This back issue was unexpected and not a recurring injury,” Indra explained.

He also said it remains uncertain whether Ginting will be fit to compete at the Thailand Masters 2026, scheduled from January 27 to February 1. The coaching team plans to monitor his recovery progress over the coming days before making a decision.

“He is supposed to travel to Thailand, but we will assess his recovery first. We will see how he progresses by Sunday,” Indra added.

With Ginting’s withdrawal, Indonesia’s men’s singles campaign at the Indonesia Masters now rests on Alwi Farhan, after Mohammad Zaki Ubaidillah was eliminated in the second round.

Ginting previously won the Indonesia Masters title in 2018 and 2020. ***
