RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesian Minister of Youth and Sports, Erick Thohir, attended the opening ceremony of the 13th ASEAN Para Games (APG) 2025 at the 80th Birthday Anniversary Stadium in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, on Tuesday night, January 20, 2026.

The regional event brings together athletes with disabilities from 11 Southeast Asian nations, competing across multiple disciplines in a spirit of unity. The Minister's presence underscored the government’s moral support for the 290 Indonesian athletes competing to raise the Merah Putih flag.

“The government and all Indonesian people provide full support to our proud athletes who will begin their struggle at the 2025 ASEAN Para Games,” Minister Erick said as quoted on the Ministry’s official website.

Reflecting on the ceremony, Minister Erick expressed optimism that Indonesia’s tradition of excellence at the Para Games would continue. He noted the confidence and spirit of the contingent, adding that collective prayers from the nation would accompany athletes, coaches, and officials in their pursuit of success.

The Indonesian team drew attention during the athlete parade by presenting cultural icons such as Hanuman and wearing traditional costumes, a display the Minister praised as a reflection of national pride and values.

Addressing challenges faced by the team, Erick urged officials to adopt a solution-oriented mindset. “I hope athlete officials do not treat issues as complaints that could disrupt preparations. Focus must remain on winning medals,” he emphasized.

He also highlighted the importance of synergy between the National Paralympic Committee (NPC) and the Chef de Mission to achieve Indonesia’s target of 82 gold medals.

Continuing his visit the following morning, Erick toured the Athlete’s Village at Suranaree University of Technology. Welcomed by NPC Secretary General Ukun Rukaendi and other officials, he personally greeted athletes and coaches, checking on their health, accommodations, and therapy facilities.

He expressed appreciation for support staff, noting their crucial role in keeping athletes in peak condition.

A key highlight was Erick’s inspection of Indonesia’s independent public kitchen at Chayada Garden House & Resort Hotel. Established to ensure proper nutrition without relying solely on local organizers, the kitchen has even attracted interest from other delegations.

Erick hailed the initiative as a breakthrough in self-reliance and friendly diplomacy. “I am proud when we do not depend on others but provide solutions ourselves,” he said.

Erick stressed that resilience and unity should define Indonesia’s delegation, reminding that sport is not only about medals but also about fostering regional solidarity. Later that day, he conveyed greetings from President Prabowo Subianto, assuring athletes of the nation’s full support.

On rewards for medalists, Erick promised the government’s commitment to maximum appreciation. “We will fight for as many gold medals as possible, the best ranking possible, and the maximum bonuses possible,” he affirmed.

Indonesia is competing in 18 sports at the Games, which run from January 20–26, 2026, with ambitions of securing 82 gold, 77 silver, and 77 bronze medals to reinforce its status as a regional powerhouse. ***
