RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Indonesia’s former Vice Minister of Finance Suahasil Nazara has been appointed as the country's new minister of finance. Indonesia's president, Prabowo Subianto, inaugurated Suahasil at the State Palace in Jakarta on Monday, September 14, 2026, after Suahasil received a phone call from the presidential staff.

"I received a call from the Palace, and then I met with the President," Suahasil said after the inauguration.

Suahasil is an academic from the University of Indonesia in Depok, West Java, who has served as Indonesia’s deputy finance minister since 2019. He replaces former minister Purbaya Yudhi Sadewa, who had held the position since September last year.

Speaking to reporters, Suahasil said he would maintain the soundness and credibility of the country’s finances, in line with Prabowo’s directive. He also assured that the state budget would support the government’s priority programs, such as self-sufficiency in food and energy.

"The President’s specific directive is to safeguard state finances, which means maintaining their soundness and credibility," Suahasil said, as quoted from the Indonesian Presidential Secretariat.

"So, the state budget, as part of state finances, must be able to implement the government’s priority programs. Therefore, the state budget must be sound. In addition to being sound, it must also be credible; the state budget must be trusted," he added.

He said the Ministry of Finance would continue working to make the state budget an instrument that can drive economic growth while maintaining national economic stability. Suahasil also assured that the state budget deficit would remain below the 3-percent threshold.

Suahasil also emphasized the importance of credible public communication in managing state finances. He said the state budget credibility must be built not only through sound policies but also through consistent communication with the public.

"The priority is to implement a credible state budget. So, I will continue to manage a state budget that people can trust, ensure credible public communication, and also make sure that what the state budget does supports the government’s priority programs," he said.

In taking on his new role, Suahasil assured that the ministry leadership transition would be properly coordinated. This, he said, would ensure that state financial management and the implementation of various government programs could continue smoothly and without disruption.
