RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Member of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR), Marwan Jafar, emphasized that whoever is appointed as the definitive Governor of Bank Indonesia (BI) to replace Perry Warjiyo must be fully committed to maintaining the central bank's independence. Perry had sent a letter showing his resignation from his position due to health reasons, and Senior Deputy Governor Destry Damayanti is in charge of the central bank's interim leadership.

"Perry Warjiyo's decision to resign must be respected. Whoever is elected Governor of Bank Indonesia must be able to maintain the central bank's independence, as mandated by law," Marwan said as quoted from the DPR's website on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.

"Bank Indonesia's independence is not merely an institutional principle, but a prerequisite for objective monetary policymaking," he added.

Bank Indonesia's independence is mandated by Act Number 23 of 1999. According to Marwan, this independence is important to ensure that monetary policy is delivered objectively to maintain national economic stability, instead of being driven by short-term political interests.

"BI, as the central bank, has a vital role to play in ensuring that monetary management is carried out professionally for the sake of economic stability, so that the economic growth target can be achieved in a quality manner," he said.

Marwan, of the National Awakening Party (PKB), believes that the failure to maintain the credibility and independence of the central bank has the potential to trigger financial market volatility, depress the rupiah exchange rate, and erode global investor confidence. Therefore, the Central Java legislator emphasized that the definitive gubernatorial election process must prioritize integrity, professionalism, and competence.

"Therefore, the process of selecting a definitive governor must prioritize professionalism, integrity, competence, and national interests. The chosen figure must be able to maintain Bank Indonesia's credibility in the eyes of the public and global economic players," he affirmed.

Marwan, the former Minister of Village and Development Disadvantaged Areas during President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo's administration, hopes that the Bank Indonesia leadership transition would proceed smoothly without disrupting financial system stability or inflation control. He believes this is critical given the global economic conditions, which the House said "remain shrouded in uncertainty and potentially put pressure on developing countries".
