RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government is accelerating the construction of Waste‑to‑Energy (WTE) plants to support environmental sustainability and strengthen the tourism sector. The Denpasar Raya WTE Plant is set to become a national model for modern waste management.

The facility is designed to process 1,400 metric tons of waste per day, with construction expected to take about 18 months. Operations are scheduled to begin by the end of 2027 as part of the national strategy for waste management and energy development.

Minister Zulkifli Hasan, often called Minister Zulhas, said Bali has taken a major step toward a modern, integrated, and sustainable waste management system.

“Effective waste management will preserve environmental quality while strengthening the competitiveness of Indonesia’s tourism sector,” he stated in Jakarta on Thursday, July 9, 2026, as quoted by I.

According to Minister Zulhas, the construction of the WTE facility is in line with Presidential Regulation No. 109/2025 and follows directives from President Prabowo Subianto. The government is expediting the project through regulatory simplification, faster permitting, and stronger cross‑sectoral coordination.

The acceleration was marked by the signing of a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA).

Danantara Indonesia’s involvement is expected to reinforce government collaboration in developing strategic infrastructure, including waste treatment facilities in other regions.

Data from the Bali Provincial Administration shows that more than 16 million tourists visited the island in 2025. Tourism contributed over 65 percent to the regional economy, generating foreign exchange revenue of about IDR 176 trillion (approx. USD 9.73 billion). At the same time, Bali produced around 3,500 metric tons of waste per day.

“The success of the Denpasar Raya WTE Plant will serve as a model for other regions in building modern waste management systems through collaboration between the government, the private sector, and the community to realize a cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable Indonesia,” Minister Zulhas said.

The government confirmed that construction of WTE plants will continue in Bekasi and Greater Bogor 1. The initiative is part of the national target to resolve 70–80 percent of Indonesia’s waste management problems by 2029. ***
