RRI.CO.ID, Paris - Indonesia has advanced its candidacy for membership in the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage for the 2026–2030 period. The move was announced during the 224th session of the UNESCO Executive Board in Paris on April 23, 2026.

The initiative reflects Indonesia’s efforts to expand its strategic role in global cultural diplomacy. It also aims to garner international support from UNESCO member states for the upcoming election.

Indonesia’s Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, presented the country’s vision under the theme “Living Heritage, Shared Future.” He emphasized Indonesia’s commitment to community-based safeguarding of intangible cultural heritage and equitable global cooperation.

“Indonesia is committed to strengthening the protection of intangible cultural heritage through inclusive and collaborative approaches,” Fadli Zon said. He added that expanding access to international support for developing countries remains a key priority.

The event was attended by around 300 delegates from UNESCO member states and its secretariat. It provided an important platform for Indonesia to directly communicate its priorities and vision to international partners.

As part of the presentation, Indonesia showcased cultural performances, including the Pendet dance and Gamelan. Both are recognized by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage, highlighting Indonesia’s rich cultural diversity.

Indonesia also proposed the establishment of an Asia-Pacific Center for Community-Based Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. The center is expected to serve as a regional hub for capacity building, knowledge exchange, and cultural preservation.

Through its active participation, Indonesia aims to strengthen its position in global cultural policy and expand multilateral cooperation. The initiative is expected to reinforce Indonesia’s role as a strategic partner in advancing global cultural heritage protection
