RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is accelerating efforts to expand digital infrastructure and internet access, aiming to achieve an average national speed of 100 Mbps within the next two years.
The initiative includes boosting investment from telecom operators, expanding fiber optic networks, strengthening fixed broadband services, and deploying satellite technology to reach underserved areas.
Deputy Communication and Digital Minister Nezar Patria emphasized that reliable internet has become a basic necessity for society. “We are committed to reaching 100 Mbps nationwide within two years, with more affordable prices,” he said on Sunday, July 5, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Nezar explained that the government’s strategy, framed under the vision “Connected, Growing, and Protected”, seeks to ensure connectivity across Indonesia while supporting the growth of the digital economy. Improved infrastructure will serve as the foundation for productivity, innovation, and access to public services.
The ministry has urged operators to increase capital spending to extend coverage to peripheral regions. Despite ongoing progress, blank spots remain, even in parts of Java.
“We must close infrastructure gaps and address areas still without signal,” Nezar noted, highlighting the need for integrated approaches combining fiber optics, broadband, and satellite connectivity.
He also pointed out that connectivity is critical during emergencies. “In disasters, alongside requests for food aid, communities also ask for signal restoration. This shows how deeply internet access is embedded in daily life,” he concluded.
The push for 100 Mbps reflects Indonesia’s broader ambition to strengthen its digital ecosystem, ensuring equitable access and positioning connectivity as a driver of national development. ***
