RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - This year’s Kartini Day celebration takes a unique form, with young Indonesian artists’ works displayed in a moving public space. Trains have become rolling canvases for Indonesian creativity.
Kartini Day, observed annually on April 21, commemorates Raden Ajeng Kartini (1879–1904), a pioneer of women’s rights and education in Indonesia. Her legacy of promoting equality and access to education continues to inspire initiatives that highlight creativity, inclusivity, and empowerment.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Ministry of Creative Economy, state-owned railway company PT Kereta Api Indonesia (Persero), and influencer-artist Erika Richardo. Launched on April 21, 2026, the program brings creative works closer to the public along the busy Jakarta–Surabaya route.
Deputy Minister of Creative Economy, Irene Umar, emphasized the government’s support for national creative talent. “This collaboration is concrete proof of how national assets like KAI can act as catalysts for the growth of local Intellectual Property (IP), making it more widely recognized and inclusively present in public spaces,” she said in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 22, quoting the ministry’s official website.
Erika Richardo explained that the project aims to bring works from digital platforms into daily life. Using her distinctive visual style, she creates an artistic experience passengers can enjoy throughout their journey.
“Hopefully, passengers can feel closer to Indonesian creativity and experience its presence in their everyday lives,” Erika said.
From an industry perspective, KAI sees the train as a new medium to enhance customer experience. Director of Human Resources and Institutional Affairs, Atih Nurhayati, noted that the initiative aligns with the company’s transformation toward more inclusive and relevant services.
“Kartini Day is an opportunity to foster more open and inclusive collaborations. KAI aims to create journeys that are increasingly connected to the lives and creativity of the community,” she said.
Several local IP characters managed by Tale X, such as Starla (Sekuya), Miyu (Halomiyu), Ripple, and Dripsy, also decorate the train’s exterior. Their presence strengthens interaction between the public, creative works, and transportation spaces within Indonesia’s creative economy ecosystem.
This collaboration highlights the synergy between creators, government, and industry. Creative works gain new public spaces, passengers enjoy fresh experiences, and train journeys become part of the interaction.
Kartini Day serves as a reminder that courage to create and cross-sector collaboration can open new opportunities. Through initiatives like this, the Ministry of Creative Economy continues to strengthen Indonesia’s creative economy ecosystem and ensure local IP grows, develops, and remains close to the public. ***
