RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian House of Representatives’ Commission VII Deputy Speaker Lamhot Sinaga said the government’s policy for managing the Eid al-Fitr 2026 exodus will play a crucial role in supporting regional economic growth while facilitating public mobility.

He noted that the annual exodus tradition has a significant impact on the economy, driving public spending across transportation, food and beverage, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs).

“The cash flow is enormous and creates a multiplier effect for the community,” Lamhot said in Jakarta on Tuesday, March 17, 2026.

Based on recent trends, cash turnover during the Eid period is estimated to reach several hundred trillion rupiah. The figure continues to rise as mobility increases post-pandemic and purchasing power improves.

Commission VII, which partners with the Ministries of MSMEs, Industry, and Tourism, views this momentum as a strategic opportunity to strengthen regional economies. Lamhot said MSMEs stand to benefit most, as returnees tend to spend in their hometowns.

“MSMEs must be able to grasp this opportunity by improving product and service quality. The government also needs to ensure financing and distribution support are optimized,” he said.

The tourism sector is also projected to grow, with higher hotel occupancy and increased visits to local destinations during the holiday. Lamhot pointed to the trend of families traveling during Eid, contributing to domestic tourism across regions.

“Hotel occupancy and visits to tourist destinations are expected to rise sharply. This presents a major opportunity for regions to boost the local economy,” he said.

Regions with leading natural, cultural, or culinary attractions are expected to see a surge in visitors. Lamhot urged local administrations to ensure accessibility, cleanliness, and safety at tourist sites to provide visitors with the best experience.

He emphasized the importance of strong coordination between the central government and local administrations in managing the surge in economic activity. Policies on traffic control and improved transportation services, he said, also facilitate economic circulation.

“The easier public mobility, the greater the potential for cash circulation,” Lamhot said.

He reminded industry and tourism stakeholders to maintain service standards amid rising demand, ensuring positive experiences for domestic tourists.

Lamhot added that the Eid exodus, if managed well, can serve as a catalyst for national economic growth by driving real-sector activity in regional areas.

With increased mobility and spending during the holiday, the House expects regional economic growth to be significantly boosted in the short term. Lamhot said success in capitalizing on this momentum depends on the readiness of all stakeholders, including the government, businesses, and the public. (Gusti Panji/Lasti Martina)
