RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta: Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency BMKG emphasized climate observation importance. The statement was delivered in Jakarta, Tuesday, March 17, 2026. It marked the 76th World Meteorological Day commemoration.

The 76th World Meteorological Day falls on March 23, 2026. It carries the theme “Observing Today, Protecting Indonesia’s Future.” BMKG integrates real-time observation with long-term protection strategies for society.

Head of BMKG, Teuku Faisal Fathani, said observations today are investments for future safety. Indonesia faces high risks due to its tropical archipelagic conditions. Hydrometeorological disasters remain a major national challenge.

Before delivering his statement, Faisal stressed the importance of observation data. He linked each dataset to future national resilience. He also underlined BMKG’s commitment to improving services.

“Today’s World Meteorological Day theme reminds us that every collected data protects our nation’s future. BMKG remains committed to strengthening observation systems, expanding networks, and improving services to protect Indonesians from climate challenges,” Faisal said.

Climate change and urbanization increase extreme weather intensity and frequency. These challenges demand stronger early warning systems for community protection. Accurate and sustainable weather information becomes essential for future safety.

Chair of HMD 2026 BMKG, Rahmat Triyono, explained BMKG’s strategic role. Continuous observation monitors atmospheric movements through complex national networks. These include stations, radars, satellites, buoys, and automatic sensors.

“Currently, BMKG operates more than 180 meteorological, climatological, and geophysical stations and 44 weather radars. This support enables BMKG to regularly deliver early warnings on extreme weather and hydrometeorological disasters,” Rahmat said.

Deputy for Climatology BMKG, Ardhasena Sopaheluwakan, highlighted collaboration importance. BMKG works with World Meteorological Organization and national partners.

“Weather and climate information is not only for experts, but for everyone: fishermen, farmers, businesses, and the public,” Ardhasena said.
