RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP) has reaffirmed its commitment to stabilizing the supply and price of fishery commodities ahead of the 2026 Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr season. By integrating wild-capture fisheries, aquaculture, and national supply reserve, the government is optimistic that price fluctuations will be kept to an absolute minimum.
In a press conference in Jakarta, Thursday, 19 February 2026, Director General of Aquaculture, TN Haeru Rahayu, stated that the aquaculture sector is now positioned as the backbone of national protein needs, especially as wild-capture fisheries face tighter management. The ministry recorded positive growth across most aquaculture commodities as of 18 February 2026.
“We can ensure that the need or supply of farmed fish from the aquaculture sector during the fasting month until the upcoming Eid, Insya Allah (God willing), can be well fulfilled,” he stated.
Overall, aquaculture production has surged by a significant 19.09%. In the data he provided, the production in Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Sulawesi was recorded as stable. Haeru noted that this surplus not only meets immediate public demand but also provides a buffer to contribute to the broader national food supply.
This surplus is being funneled into a network of cold storage facilities across the Indonesian archipelago to anticipate the spike in demand during the holidays. Machmud, Acting Director General of Product Competitiveness (PDSPKP), explained that these cold storage units act as a vital stabilization instrument.
“The stock remains available in each cold storage facility. If we need to increase the stock further, we still have the capacity. For example, in Medan, the capacity is 22,000 tons, while current stock sits at 3,400 tons. If there is excess production, particularly from wild-capture fisheries, it can still be stored there,” he said.
In the data he provided, the total reserve across the cold storages totaled up more than 284 thousand tons, with tens of thousand tons of spaces remaining. With robust reserves and an upward trend in aquaculture output, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries is confident that fish protein supplies for Ramadan and Eid in Indonesia remain secure and under control.
