RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia continues to strengthen its maritime supervision through international cooperation. The Indonesian Maritime and Security Agency (Bakamla RI) has deployed six personnel to participate in maritime monitoring training with the Japan Coast Guard using air patrol aircraft.

The training aims to improve Bakamla RI’s human resources capacity in utilizing air-based maritime monitoring technology. Held at Halim Perdanakusuma Air Base in Jakarta, the program has entered its third day, featuring direct aerial monitoring practice.

Bakamla RI Deputy for Operations and Training Rear Admiral Eko Wahjono said the training is designed to enhance personnel’s technical understanding of modern maritime surveillance systems. He explained that the aircraft used was a Gulfstream V belonging to the Japan Coast Guard, equipped with advanced cameras and detection radar.

“This is a highly sophisticated maritime patrol aircraft. It can monitor all ship activities at sea,” Eko said in Jakarta on Thursday, February 19, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He added that the aircraft’s monitoring system is integrated with radar technology consistent with the development of Bakamla RI’s National Maritime Surveillance System (NMSS). The integration of air and ground surveillance is expected to facilitate vessel monitoring in Indonesian waters.

Eko noted that Bakamla RI has no plans to purchase Gulfstream V-class aircraft. Instead, the agency is waiting for Indonesian Aerospace (PT Dirgantara Indonesia/PTDI) to complete modifications to the N219 aircraft, which will be used to support national air patrols.

The training is expected to enable Bakamla RI personnel to apply the technology and methods they have learned to strengthen Indonesia’s maritime security and safety systems. ***
