RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is strengthening its carbon economy ecosystem to position itself as a credible destination for global green investment through a transparent and internationally aligned climate governance framework, Minister of Environment Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat said.
Speaking at a media briefing in Jakarta on Thursday, 30 July 2026, Jumhur emphasized that climate change is no longer solely an environmental issue but has evolved into an economic, geopolitical, and investment competitiveness challenge.
He said Indonesia's vast natural resources and expanding low-carbon economy provide a strong foundation for the country to become a global leader in carbon markets. According to him, this ambition is supported by a credible and transparent governance system that integrates forests, renewable energy, and industrial transformation into a competitive green economy.
The minister explained that Indonesia has established the National Carbon Registry System (SRUK) as the backbone of the country's regulatory framework. The platform records the entire lifecycle of carbon units—from issuance and trading to utilization and retirement—within a unified national system to ensure transparency, legal certainty, and environmental integrity.
Jumhur noted that the registry is directly integrated with Indonesia's national carbon exchange and strengthened by blockchain technology, enabling real-time updates of carbon ownership and transactions while preventing double counting. “International investors are not merely looking for carbon projects; they are looking for confidence in governance and regulatory certainty,” he said.
He added that Indonesia currently has dozens of carbon projects ready to enter the market, including seven projects under the Indonesian Emission Reduction Certificate (SPEI), 45 projects under the FOLU Net Sink standard, and nine projects certified under the Gold Standard.
Beyond supporting domestic carbon trading, Jumhur said the registry system also enables Indonesia to participate in international carbon cooperation under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The country is advancing bilateral carbon initiatives with Norway, Japan, Singapore, and the Republic of Korea while facilitating the transition of Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects into the Paris Agreement framework.
Concluding his remarks, Jumhur stressed that Indonesia's carbon economy is designed not only to contribute to climate mitigation and adaptation but also to create prosperity. He said the government aims to ensure that the development of carbon markets delivers tangible economic benefits while reinforcing Indonesia's role as a trusted partner in the global transition toward a sustainable, low-carbon future.
