RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Climate change control in Indonesia has reached a new stage through inter-ministerial collaboration. The Ministry of Environment and the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries have agreed to strengthen cooperation to optimize the carbon economy in the marine and fisheries sectors.

This cooperation focuses on coastal and marine ecosystem management as part of the national climate mitigation and adaptation strategy. This step also aims to support the achievement of targets outlined in the Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC) document.

Deputy for Climate Change Control and Carbon Economic Value Management at the Ministry of Environment/Environmental Control Agency, Ary Sudijanto, emphasized Indonesia's strategic position as the world's largest archipelagic country.

“More than 70 percent of our territory is sea, and more than 60 percent of our population lives in coastal areas,” said Ary in Jakarta on Wednesday, February 18, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Ary believes that the marine and fisheries sector holds a key role in achieving national climate targets. According to him, Indonesia's mangrove and seagrass potential, which accounts for about 20-25 percent of the world's total, is an essential asset for carbon absorption and storage.

These ecosystems also serve to protect coastlines, maintain biodiversity, and strengthen coastal community resilience. The management and restoration of mangroves and seagrass is considered effective in reducing greenhouse gas emissions while improving national climate resilience.

As a follow-up, the two ministries signed a Cooperation Agreement on Climate Change Control Cooperation in the Maritime and Fisheries Sector. This agreement is designed to strengthen cross-sector coordination in the mitigation and adaptation agenda in coastal and marine areas.

The Director General of Marine Management at the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, A. Koswara, stated that this cooperation is consistent with the national mandate.

“This commitment is confirmed through Presidential Regulation No. 110/2025 on the Implementation of Carbon Economic Value Instruments and National Greenhouse Gas Emission Control, which mandates the Ministry to lead climate action in the marine and fisheries sector,” said Koswara. ***
