RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has initiated new measures to strengthen national food security through sugar labeling policies and a special task force. This agenda is part of the initial implementation of Government Regulation No. 1/2026 on Food Security, which is currently being discussed across ministries and agencies.
The Indonesian Coordinating Minister for Food, Zulkifli Hasan, highlighted the increase in cases of non-communicable diseases, which are now commonly experienced by young people due to excessive sugar consumption. “According to reports from various parties, it turns out that many youths are already suffering from sugar-related diseases,” said Minister Zulkifli in Jakarta on Monday, February 9, 2026, quoted by Antara.
He explained that the government will establish a cross-ministerial team to develop a scheme for labeling sugar content in food and beverages. “So, food and beverages with high sugar content will be labeled accordingly, so that people know the risks of consuming them,” said Minister Zulkifli.
In addition to labeling, the meeting agreed to form food safety task forces at the central and regional levels. This team is designed to respond quickly to cases of residue, food safety disturbances, and emergencies.
The task force involves the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, the Ministry of Health, the police, the National Food Agency (Bapanas), and the Food and Drug Administration (BPOM). The government is also reorganizing the management of processed foods so that all products comply with applicable safety standards.
Minister Zulkifli said that halal standards and the distribution of processed products are also concerns in this policy. “What kind of processed products will be allowed to circulate in Indonesia, including whether they are halal or not, will also be discussed,” he said.
Meanwhile, BPOM Head Taruna Ikrar said that his agency is currently harmonizing the derivative regulations of the Government Regulation. “BPOM is currently in the process of harmonizing the regulations that we will make into BPOM regulations on labeling or nutri-grade," he said.
Taruna emphasized that the policy on labeling sugar, salt, and fat refers to Codex standards and recommendations from the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).
“The target is to finish as soon as possible, but there will definitely be an adjustment period based on the provisions set by the government,” he said. ***
