RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The government is strengthening food reserves amid forecasts of prolonged dry season due to climate anomalies. The warning follows projections of a "Godzilla" El Nino combined with a positive Indian Ocean Dipole starting April.
As quoted by the National Food Agency's website on Thursday, March 26, 2027, National Research and Innovation Agency said both phenomena may occur simultaneously and affect Indonesia’s climate patterns. These conditions could lead to longer and drier dry seasons across several regions nationwide.
To anticipate risks in the food sector, the government is reinforcing food reserves (CPP). The reserves prioritize domestic production absorption to ensure rapid intervention during weather-related disruptions.
“The prediction of the Godzilla El Nino has been a concern for the government,” said I Gusti Ketut Astawa, Deputy for Food Supply and Stabilization. He further remarked the strategic food reserves will be strenghtened to support the people.
National Food Agency's report as of March 25, 2026 viewed the food reserves under the Government Food Reserve program remain sufficient across multiple key commodities. Other food reserves are also strengthened including rice, corn, cooking oil, sugar, beef, chicken meat, and eggs.
Rice reserves stored by state-owned logistic company Bulog currently reached 4.08 million tons nationwide. This figure increased significantly by 77.8 percent compared to 2.29 million tons last year.
Meanwhile, corn reserves reached around 144 thousand tons, largely sourced from domestic production absorption. Indonesia has also stopped importing feed corn since 2025, strengthening domestic supply independence.
