RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - President Prabowo Subianto has approved a draft Presidential Regulation (Perpres) requiring Indonesia’s business community to comply with international human rights principles.

The move embeds corporate accountability into national policy and marks a significant step toward aligning Indonesia’s economy with global standards.

Human Rights Minister Natalius Pigai stressed that the regulation is not merely a domestic initiative but a crucial requirement for Indonesia’s integration into the global multilateral community.

He noted that compliance with Business and Human Rights standards is a key prerequisite for Indonesia’s bid to join the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

“Because Indonesia is a member of a multilateral international institution, this is a requirement demanded by the international community. There must be regulations that govern the business world’s compliance with human rights,” Natalius Pigai said during a hearing with Commission XIII of the House of Representatives (DPR RI) on Monday, February 2, 2026.

The government aims to finalize the regulation by the end of 2026, followed by a nationwide socialization phase in 2027. This timeline is intended to give business owners time to gradually adapt their operations to the new requirements. The principles will also be codified through an upcoming revision of the National Human Rights Law.

State Secretary Minister Prasetyo Hadi underscored the importance of coordination in drafting the regulation. He instructed all relevant ministries and non-ministerial government institutions to begin cross-sectoral discussions within 14 working days of the President’s approval.

The drafting process will adhere to Law No. 13/2022 on the formation of legislation to ensure the regulation is legally sound.

By establishing this framework, the administration seeks to foster a responsible, sustainable business environment that protects workers and communities while maintaining Indonesia’s competitiveness globally. (Naura Sofia/Lasti Martina)
