RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) and the West Java Provincial Government officially launched Weather Modification Operations (OMC) to anticipate potential extreme weather in the local area. This strategic operation is scheduled to take place over five days, from 25-29 January 2026.
Husein Sastranegara Air Force Base in Bandung City was chosen as the coordination center and main base during the operation. This step was taken to mitigate the risk of hydrometeorological disasters such as floods and landslides that threaten residents' settlements.
BMKG's OMC Director, Budi Harsoyo, explained that the team's main focus is to redistribute rainfall before it reaches disaster-prone areas. This effort is being made so that the high intensity of rain can be diverted to other, safer areas with minimal risk.
The Indonesian Air Force deployed a fleet of Cassa 212 aircraft with registration number A-2107 for today's operation. Tim conducted sortie one at 09:50 WIB, focusing on cloud seeding in the Jatiluhur area.
This step specifically helps the evacuation process and the distribution of logistical aid in landslide-affected areas, particularly in Pasir Langu Village, Cisarua," Budi said on Monday, 26 January 2026.
This operation is crucial to support the smooth evacuation process and the delivery of logistical aid at the landslide disaster site. This is specifically aimed at residents in Pasir Langu Village, Cisarua District, who were severely affected.
West Java Regional Secretary, Herman Suryatman, affirmed that this activity is a direct instruction from the Governor as a proactive step to protect the public. The government is fully committed to ensuring that teams on the ground can work to their maximum potential without being hindered by bad weather conditions.
“We are conducting Weather Modification Operations as a form of anticipation and technical solution based on the direction of the Governor. We hope that these Weather Modification Operations will be able to control the intensity of rainfall in vulnerable areas,” he said.
The public is also reminded to keep the drainage channels clean to minimize the risk of local flooding in their respective environments. A calm yet vigilant attitude is the key to facing the potential extreme weather predicted to hit.
