RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is strengthening efforts to preserve cultural heritage through the launch of a new book documenting traditional culture from southern Sumatra. The initiative was highlighted by Minister of Culture Fadli Zon at the book launch event in Jakarta.

The book, titled Selayang Kemilau Bhumi Lima Negeri, was launched at the National Library of Indonesia, 22 January 2026. It is the result of collaboration between Gramedia Pustaka Utama and the cultural organization Putri Bumi Sriwijaya.

The minister said the publication aligns with Indonesia’s constitutional mandate to advance national culture. He described the book as a strategic effort to document traditional textiles, attire, and jewellery from southern Sumatra.

According to him, cultural documentation through books plays a vital role in preserving collective memory. Written narratives ensure that local wisdom remains accessible for future generations.

He also encouraged the translation of cultural books into international languages. He said wider global access would help introduce Indonesia’s cultural richness to international audiences.

The Minister affirmed that culture must be published to survive in the modern era. He added that digital formats such as e-books are essential to reach broader audiences worldwide.

The project also highlights the importance of community participation in cultural preservation. Local cultural organizations are seen as key contributors to safeguarding intangible cultural heritage.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture hopes the book will serve as an educational platform for younger generations. Officials say such initiatives strengthen Indonesia’s cultural presence and narrative on the global stage.
