RRI.CO.ID, Bandar Lampung - Indonesia expands public understanding of its new Criminal Code and Criminal Procedure Code. The effort was highlighted during a working visit to Bandar Lampung on Wednesday, July 15, 2026.
Indonesia's Vice Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections Otto Hasibuan met Lampung Vice Governor Jihan Nurlela. The visit also introduced the ministry's role while promoting legal reform among regional stakeholders.
The Indonesian government said successful implementation requires broad cooperation from institutions across the country. The socialization targets law enforcement officers, academics, lawyers, and regional governments.
He addressed public concerns surrounding the newly enacted Criminal Code during the meeting. He emphasized that the law adopts a more humane approach without reducing legal certainty.
"Many people, especially academics, ask why the new Criminal Code appears to favor criminals because it recognizes the concept of forgiveness. In fact, that is not its substance. Legal development is moving toward a more humane approach without reducing legal certainty or protection for victims," he said.
Otto also stressed that legal reform cannot succeed through government efforts alone. He called for collaboration among all stakeholders to ensure effective implementation.
"The implementation of the Criminal Code and the Criminal Procedure Code requires cooperation from all parties, including lawyers and law enforcement officers present tonight. The ultimate goal is to ensure that the public obtains justice through a legal system that is better, more modern, and continues to uphold humanitarian values," he added.
The Indonesian government expects the outreach program to improve public understanding of the legal reforms. He said better awareness is expected to support effective implementation while strengthening legal certainty and justice.
