RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia has cemented its status as a premier global destination, with the Ministry of Tourism reporting growth figures that have comfortably surpassed national targets for 2025.
The surge in arrivals and domestic travel signals a robust recovery, driven by targeted promotional strategies and a growing international appetite for the archipelago’s diverse offerings.
According to Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, the country’s appeal to international travelers is intensifying. Data from the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS) shows that between January and November 2025, foreign visits reached 13.98 million, a sharp rise from the 12.66 million recorded during the same timeframe in 2024.
"This achievement shows that our marketing and promotional strategies are effective and on target," Widiyanti stated during a working meeting with Commission VII of the House of Representatives (DPR RI), as quoted by Antara.
Final tabulations expected in February are projected to show total 2025 arrivals hitting 15.3 million, effectively beating the government’s initial target of 15 million. This influx has been a massive boon to the national treasury, with tourism foreign-exchange earnings reaching 13.82 billion USD in the first nine months of 2025 alone.
While international numbers are high, the "unsung hero" of the sector remains the domestic traveler. National tourism hit a historic peak with 1.09 billion domestic trips by November 2025, exceeding the year's target of 1.08 billion.
"This shows that domestic tourism has very strong resilience and is a major pillar of the national tourism sector," the Minister noted.
This internal mobility helped the industry absorb 25.91 million workers by the end of the year, underscoring the sector's role as a primary engine for employment.
Looking toward the 2026 fiscal year, the Ministry is pivoting its focus from quantity to the quality of the tourism experience. A major component of this "Tourism 5.0" strategy is the digitalization of event licensing and a massive push for professional certification.
To sustain this momentum, the government has established specific targets for 2026 that focus on elevating the quality of the tourism workforce. A primary goal is Professional Certification, with the ministry aiming to facilitate competency-based training for 1,900 industry professionals to meet global standards.
The plan also emphasizes Regional Development, which involves training 2,090 individuals across all 38 provinces in essential soft skills, management, and sustainable tourism practices.
Furthermore, to ensure a long-term pipeline of talent, the ministry is targeting Vocational Excellence by graduating 2,950 students from the nation’s six specialized Tourism Polytechnics (Poltekpar).
"We believe that human resources are central to tourism development. Therefore, we are not only encouraging an increase in workforce quantity but also in quality through various training programs, certifications, and competency development," Minister Widiyanti explained.
With Bali recently being named the world’s best destination by TripAdvisor, the Ministry aims to leverage this prestige to expand growth in "Village Tourism" (Desa Wisata) and enhance travel safety standards nationwide in the coming year. ***
