KBRN, Jakarta: At 109 years old, Grandma Sumbuk (Nenek Sumbu) is set to become Indonesia's oldest Hajj pilgrim in 2025. The woman from Bekasi, West Java, will travel to Mecca, the Holy Land, alongside her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchild, who will support her throughout the pilgrimage.

Her departure is filled with emotional moments as family and neighbors gather at her home, offering prayers for a smooth and blessed journey.

Despite her advanced age, Nenek Sumbuk remains calm, accompanied by her daughter Sukmi, who has been by her side throughout the preparation process.

A Journey Years in the Making

Born in Kebumen, Central Java, in 1916, Nenek Sumbuk has long dreamed of fulfilling Islam's fifth pillar.

Though time has slowed her steps and dulled her hearing, her determination remains steadfast. Age has never been a barrier to her deep spiritual aspiration, which has grown stronger over the years.

Her preparations for Hajj have been meticulous. The Hajj and Umrah Guidance Group (KBIHU) has provided extensive support, ensuring her health assessments, travel documentation, and spiritual readiness are all in order.

Special arrangements, including a wheelchair and dedicated assistance, have ensured her comfort throughout the pilgrimage.

Departure & Significance

Nenek Sumbuk is part of the Jakarta-Bekasi (JKS) batch 33 and will enter the Bekasi Hajj Dormitory on May 16, 2025, before departing for Saudi Arabia on May 17, 2025.

Her journey marks a historical moment, coinciding with the second wave of Indonesian pilgrims departing for the Holy Land.

When asked about the prayers she wishes to offer in Mecca, she responded simply in Javanese, which her daughter Sukmi translated:

"My prayer is that my Hajj will be accepted and blessed," as reported by haji.kemenag.go.id.

More than just a story about age, Nenek Sumbuk's pilgrimage is a testament to unwavering faith and hope. Her commitment serves as a reminder that Hajj is a calling of the heart that transcends time and physical limitations.

With prayers from loved ones and the determination that has carried her this far, she is ready to take steps toward the House of Allah. ***
