Betawi Community Showcases Traditional Snacks During Eid

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Eid al-Fitr celebrations across Indonesia are marked by distinctive regional traditions, and for the Betawi community in Jakarta, food plays a central role. Beyond staple dishes such as ketupat and opor, Betawi households prepare a variety of traditional snacks that welcome guests during festive gatherings.
These snacks, ranging from sweet to savory, carry strong cultural roots and add warmth to the atmosphere of Lebaran. Each has its own story and preparation method, reflecting the culinary heritage of the Betawi people.
One of the most iconic is kue kembang goyang, a flower-shaped cookie with a crisp texture and sweet flavor. Made using a special mold dipped and shaken in hot oil, the cookie is often stored in jars and served to visitors.

Another favorite is kue akar kelapa, named for its root-like shape. This crunchy snack combines flour and coconut milk, fried until golden. Its slightly savory taste with a hint of sweetness makes it a popular companion during family conversations.

Equally common is biji ketapang, bite-sized pieces of dough fried until crisp. Simple in flavor yet addictive, these small snacks are typically served in large quantities, ensuring guests always have something to nibble on.

The Betawi also serve kue semprong, a thin, rolled wafer with a light texture and sweet taste. Made with coconut milk, it carries a distinctive aroma and is enjoyed throughout the day as a light treat.

Finally, no Betawi Lebaran table is complete without dodol Betawi, a chewy confection made from glutinous rice flour and palm sugar. Rich and sweet, dodol is usually offered in small portions due to its dense texture. It is not only enjoyed during Eid but also given as a traditional gift or souvenir.
