RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - A two-month-long photography exhibition capturing the cultural and natural essence of Lake Toba is poised to strengthen the local creative economy ecosystem and elevate the tourism value of North Sumatra through visual storytelling.
The Toba Heritage Photo Exhibition, which bridges high art with strategic regional branding, highlights how the photography subsector can serve as a catalyst for local businesses. By creating a compelling visual narrative, the event aims to transform cultural preservation into economic growth, drawing international attention to one of Indonesia's premier travel destinations.
Creative Economy Minister and Head of the Creative Economy Agency (Bekraf) Teuku Riefky Harsya emphasized that photography is far more than an artistic outlet; it is a powerful economic tool capable of enhancing a destination's image, driving tourist arrivals, and generating new business opportunities for local creators.
“North Sumatra is a priority region for creative economy development, boasting immense potential backed by cultural strengths, creative talent, and world-class natural scenery, such as Lake Toba. In this context, photography serves not only as a medium of expression but also plays a role in boosting tourism, shaping the region's narrative, and generating economic value,” said Riefky in a statement received on Monday, July 13, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
The minister noted that North Sumatra remains a priority zone for creative development due to its world-class landscapes and rich cultural heritage. Running from June 10 to August 10, 2026, at the Huta Art Space, the exhibition centers on the theme Visual Reconstruction of Heritage.
It showcases 47 curated works from 10 distinct photographers, documenting the cultural wealth, daily communal life, traditional architecture, and sweeping landscapes of the Lake Toba region.
Riefky expressed hope that the exhibition would serve as a vital space of appreciation for local photographers while expanding Lake Toba's promotional reach on both national and international stages.
Professional photographer and Huta Art Space founder Edward Tigor Siahaan explained that the event was meticulously designed to foster a sustainable photography ecosystem. The exhibition was curated by renowned photographer Darwis Triadi and organized in close collaboration with the Lake Toba Photographers Community (KFDT).
"Toba Heritage is not merely a photography exhibition; it serves as a meeting point for local photographers to grow, learn from one another, and introduce the rich heritage of Lake Toba to the wider public. The presence of the Minister of Creative Economy provides significant moral support for our creative community to continue producing work," Edward said.
Edward emphasized that the gallery functions as a collaborative hub where homegrown talents can sharpen their skills, learn from one another, and present Lake Toba's deep heritage to a broader audience.
During his working visit, Minister Riefky also visited Piltik Coffee to engage with entrepreneurs in the culinary subsector. The ministry reiterated that reinforcing creative spaces and improving local talent capacity are crucial steps to accelerating the national creative economy and maximizing the direct financial benefits for the surrounding community. ***
