RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Every September 2, the world observes World Coconut Day, a commemoration highlighting the importance of coconuts to communities and economies. The observance was first celebrated in 2009 by the Asian and Pacific Coconut Community (APCC), marking the establishment of the organization.

World Coconut Day also serves as an opportunity to raise awareness of the role of coconuts and the livelihoods of coconut farmers, particularly across the Asia-Pacific region. The observance also aims to promote coconut products from the region and increase their recognition around the world.

Coconuts offer a wide range of benefits, serving not only as a source of food but also as an important economic commodity. Almost every part of the coconut palm can be utilized, including its fruit, water, flesh, shell, and husk.

In Indonesia, coconut flesh is widely used to make coconut milk, coconut oil, copra, and various traditional foods. Coconut water is also a popular beverage, while coconut flesh can be processed into a variety of food products.

Beyond the fruit, coconut shells and husks also have practical and economic value. Coconut shells can be processed into charcoal and handicrafts, while coconut husks can be used to make ropes, doormats, growing media, and other products.

Coconuts are also closely connected to Indonesia’s culinary traditions and culture. Coconut milk, for example, is an essential ingredient in many Indonesian dishes, while grated coconut is commonly used in traditional foods and regional specialties.

Through World Coconut Day, the importance of coconuts can be seen from various perspectives, ranging from food and health to economic opportunities and livelihoods. For Indonesia, sustainable coconut utilization can also create opportunities to increase the value of coconut products while strengthening their position in the global market.
