RRI.CO.ID, Kazan – Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono welcomed the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the United States and Iran as an important step toward de-escalation and the peaceful resolution of conflict. In Indonesia’s national statement at the ASEAN-Russia Commemorative Summit in Kazan, Russia, on Thursday, 18 June 2026, Sugiono said the agreement demonstrates that dialogue remains the most effective way to resolve disputes between nations.

“We welcome the signing of the MoU between the United States and Iran toward de-escalation and the peaceful resolution of the conflict. This demonstrates that dialogue remains the most effective path,” Sugiono said.

Nevertheless, Sugiono stressed that Indonesia remains seriously concerned about the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Palestine. He noted that positive developments in one region should not divert the world’s attention from the many challenges to peace and stability that persist elsewhere.

“Indonesia remains gravely concerned by the ongoing humanitarian catastrophe in Palestine. While progress in one region is encouraging, many challenges to peace and stability remain,” he said.

Sugiono also urged ASEAN and Russia to continue strengthening cooperation in promoting peace and stability in regions facing security challenges.

During the summit, Sugiono emphasized that the ASEAN-Russia meeting reflects the spirit of the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific, which promotes inclusive cooperation, mutual benefit, and unwavering respect for ASEAN Centrality. Indonesia, he added, welcomes the Kazan Declaration adopted during the meeting.

He described the declaration as an important step toward building a regional architecture that positions ASEAN as a key partner in advancing dialogue and cooperation, rather than engaging the bloc solely on the basis of major powers’ strategic interests.

“This is a step toward a regional architecture in which major powers engage ASEAN not merely because of strategic interests, but as a central partner in advancing dialogue and cooperation,” Sugiono said.
