- UN investigation underway after artillery and convoy attacks in Lebanon kill three Indonesian peacekeepers, results expected soon amid tense security conditions.
RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Escalating military activity in southern Lebanon has turned deadly for UN peacekeepers, with three Indonesian personnel killed in separate attacks in late March. The incidents highlight growing risks faced by international forces operating in volatile areas.
The United Nations is actively investigating the attacks, with results expected soon. UN Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric described the assaults on UNIFIL personnel as “unacceptable and accountable.”
“The investigation is ongoing, and despite challenging circumstances, we are confident we can provide updates on its findings shortly,” he said at a press briefing on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Technical experts are examining physical evidence at the sites and coordinating with relevant parties. The investigation has been slowed by the need to reduce tensions on the ground, but the UN remains committed to uncovering the full truth.
UN Deputy Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix stressed the importance of monitoring the situation to safeguard peacekeepers.
The incidents follow a series of violent events in southern Lebanon. On April 1, UNIFIL reported “a large explosion and demolition” in the village of Naqoura near its headquarters. The day before, on March 31, UNIFIL recorded 62 airspace violations amid heightened military activity and rocket fire targeting Israel and UN personnel in Lebanon.
The Indonesian casualties occurred over two days. On Sunday, March 29, Lance Corporal (Praka) Farizal Rhomadhon was killed by artillery fire near the Indonesian contingent’s position in Adchit Al Qusayr, southern Lebanon. On Monday, March 30, a convoy they were escorting came under attack, killing Captain Zulmi Aditya Iskandar and Sergeant Muhammad Nur Ichwan.
The UN has pledged to continue its investigation and closely monitor developments to protect all peacekeeping personnel in the region. ***
