RRI.CO.ID, Vienna - Head of the National Narcotics Agency (BNN), Suyudi Ario Seto, presented Indonesia’s national achievements in drug‑control efforts during the 69th session of the United Nations Commission on Narcotic Drugs (CND), held from 9 to 13 March 2026 in Vienna, Austria.

The event took place at the Vienna International Centre (VIC), the main UN forum on drug‑related matters. During the General Debate, Suyudi highlighted one of Indonesia’s key successes in combating narcotics, which is strengthening rehabilitation programs.

“This includes the exposure of hundreds of drug-related cases and the dismantling of narcotics-trafficking networks, including international syndicates. Furthermore, it encompasses the reinforcement of rehabilitation programs through the ‘Ananda Bersinar’ campaign, involving hundreds of institutions across Indonesia,” Suyudi said, as quoted by the Indonesia Foreign Affairs Ministry’s website on Wednesday, 18 March 2026.

In his national statement, the BNN Head highlighted the growing complexity of the global drug situation. He specifically cited the proliferation of synthetic drugs, the use of maritime routes, and the exploitation of digital platforms by transnational crime syndicates.

“Indonesia stresses firm action against narcotics‑crime networks while ensuring a humane, human‑rights‑based rehabilitation approach for victims of drug abuse,” he affirmed.

As part of Indonesia’s contribution to the global discussion, the country organized an exhibition at Rotunda Hall, VIC, under the theme “Enhancing International Cooperation for Future Development Starting from Children: ‘Ananda Bersinar’ to Address Drug Challenges.”

The event was a joint initiative of BNN and the Embassy of Indonesia/Permanent Mission of the Republic of Indonesia to the UN in Vienna. The opening ceremony was led by the BNN Head and attended by the Indonesian Ambassador/Permanent Representative, as well as ambassadors and permanent representatives from friendly countries based in Vienna.

Indonesia also held a side event focusing on the dangers of vaping and narcotics, addressing the rising trend of vaping devices contaminated with drugs and underscoring the need for stronger domestic regulation and international cooperation.

During the 69th session of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs, delegates adopted several resolutions covering various aspects of global drug‑control challenges. These included strengthening early-warning mechanisms for synthetic drugs and improving supply chain integrity to prevent illicit production.

They also focused on reinforcing the implementation of the UN Guiding Principles on Alternative Development.

As a member of the Commission on Narcotic Drugs for the 2024–2027 term, Indonesia supported the adoption of these resolutions. This reflects its commitment to enhancing international cooperation in responding to the evolving dynamics of global drug problems. (Annaila Azzahra/Bambang MBKA)
