RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Amid the escalating conflict in the Middle East, the Indonesian government is working on two fronts simultaneously: protecting Indonesian citizens (WNI) in the affected region and promoting diplomacy to prevent the war from escalating.
Indonesian Foreign Minister Sugiono confirmed that the evacuation of Indonesian citizens from Iran will be carried out in stages and voluntarily, following the deteriorating security situation caused by the war.
"I have ordered the Ambassador in Tehran to take immediate evacuation steps if any Indonesian citizens request evacuation. There are 15 of us in Tehran," Minister Sugiono said in a press statement on Tuesday, March 3, 2026 evening.
Because Iranian airspace remains closed, the government is planning a land evacuation to Baku, Azerbaijan, with an estimated travel time of approximately 10 hours.
According to Minister Sugiono, the evacuation process cannot be rushed. The government must consider logistical aspects, the health conditions of Indonesian citizens, and readiness at the destination.
"We cannot relocate people who do not want to be relocated. The evacuation will be gradual and voluntary," he said.
Not all Indonesian citizens in Iran or other countries affected by the conflict have chosen to be evacuated. Minister Sugiono said that Indonesian citizens in Qatar, Bahrain, and the United Arab Emirates have not submitted evacuation requests so far.
At the same time, Indonesia is also intensifying diplomatic communications. Minister Sugiono confirmed that he had held direct talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi to discuss the escalating conflict.
"Indonesia is ready to play a constructive role in promoting peace, including offering our willingness to facilitate dialogue or mediation," he said.
The government also urges all parties to exercise restraint, de-escalate, and uphold international law and the United Nations Charter.
The evacuation measures demonstrate the government's top priority is the safety of Indonesian citizens. However, the diplomatic approach affirms Indonesia's position as a country actively promoting regional stability.
Given the dynamic situation and the potential for it to spread to other Gulf countries, the government stated that it will continue to monitor developments and adjust strategic measures, both at the level of citizen protection and international diplomacy. (Misni Parjiati/Bambang MBKA)
